Shortage of skilled workers and rubber asphalt: Kurz is doing something

Wendlingen/Landau, April 09.04.2019th, XNUMX When two entrepreneur representatives talk to each other, they quickly come to the subject of the shortage of skilled workers: that it is becoming more and more dramatic, that it is difficult to find good people. Much is lamented. The situation remains tense, but successes can also be achieved with appropriate activities. Kurz Karkassenhandel becomes active. For some time now, managing director Hanna Schöberl has been using the social media channels Facebook, Xing and LinkedIn to search for employees in addition to the website. “Of course it is not easy to find good employees. We use digital media intensively, go to events in our catchment area and promote employee loyalty through many different measures - we still receive applications through these channels," says Hanna Schöberl. In March, KURZ was represented with a booth at the Wendlinger performance show, where Joey Kelly also appeared. The Kurz trainees and employees who trained at Kurz advertised for the next trainee year. The young people quickly make contact with each other, exchange ideas and in this way the applicants find out at eye level what opportunities are open to them at KURZ.

Help each other and achieve goals together

In day-to-day business, the interaction between many nations often poses a challenge. Many people with a migration background work in the used tire industry. The lowest common denominator is the German language and it is important to promote it. Kurz employees with a migration background can therefore attend German courses, and Kurz will bear the costs. "This has various advantages," says plant manager Ranko Josic, "we promote integration into the community, which strengthens cohesion and the exchange in the company works better."

Rubber-modified asphalt as a test track on the company premises

For the time being, the professional future of scrap tire disposal companies seems secure: the number of vehicles will remain stable for the next ten years; ie the quantity of tires to be disposed of remains constant. The known processes used for this, on the other hand, are changing - less and less thermal recycling is being used.

In accordance with the circular economy, the aim is to recycle and reuse all raw materials. Tire grinding is a technology that makes an important contribution to this by producing technologically complex and high-quality rubber powder. Rubber modified asphalt is a great way to recycle rubber crumb.

Not only those who dispose of used tires know this, but also specialty chemical companies such as Evonik, which conducts research in this field and produces the additives required for processing, such as "VESTENAMER®". Relevant studies show that rubber asphalt with the additive VESTENAMER® can be processed without any problems and offers decisive advantages: less rutting, longer durability and, especially when laying porous asphalt, a significantly lower noise level.

In order to show the quality of the rubber-modified asphalt in use, Kurz's premises in Wendlingen are asphalted with rubber asphalt by the Kirchheim-based road builder Waggershauser. The project is also scientifically supported by the engineering company PTM Dortmund. “We are investing a lot of money in the future here. It would have been easier to cover the company premises with "normal asphalt", explains Hanna Schöberl, "but of course it is a great step forward if we can show the advantages live right on our doorstep." The project will be completed in summer 2019.
