Film: What happens to old and broken tires?

NEW LIFE films the new life of the gummies

What happens to used tires that are no longer used on vehicles? The NEW LIFE initiative shows this in its new film. As a partner, KURZ attaches great importance to the professional recycling of used tires. It is clearly shown how the tires are processed and which products are made from them. It is also being clarified whether these new products can have an impact on health when used.

The story behind the film is quickly told. A young man has the tires changed in a specialist garage. There he is offered to have the old tires professionally disposed of for a small fee. This arouses curiosity as to what “professional” actually means. A short journey begins that shows the recycling of the tires through sorting, dismantling and fine grinding and then also goes into the products that are ultimately made from them. And this range is huge, as is the potential: from building protection mats and impact sound insulation to vases and playground floors, everything is included.

The young man asks himself why these opportunities are not used much more. But he learns that there are reservations about possible health hazards from the ingredients in the recyclates. Prof. Dr. Ulrich Giese from the German Institute for Rubber Technology explains that the potentially carcinogenic substances, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, PAH for short, are ubiquitous in our cities. Even when grilling, PAHs are produced by burning fat - and then even taken orally directly. According to Giese, the risk of absorbing them when using recycled products is no higher than in the urban environment in general.

With the new film, the NEW LIFE initiative is aimed at all people, especially drivers, who want to live the circular economy. The video offers a look beyond the horizon and looks behind the scenes of scrap tire recycling. How are the tires crushed and processed, what can be made from them?
