Waste tyre disposal is a demanding task that belongs in professional, experienced hands. After all, not all used tyres are the same. Professionals differentiate between carcasses and tread tyres: The Tread tyres has, as the name suggests, a residual profile.
The Carcass is what remains when the tread of a tyre is completely worn down. Tread tyres are either suitable for Export in countries where high speeds are not possible due to the road conditions, or as the carcasses for the Retreading - unless they have already been retreaded once.
Of course, the tyres must be undamaged, i.e. they must not show any signs of damage or have been driven faster than 210 km/h. Several tests are carried out to ensure that a tyre is suitable for retreading. Only tyres that are no longer suitable for export or retreading are recycled or thermally recovered.
With the Retreading the tread is "peeled" off the carcass and then a new one is applied. A car tyre can be retreaded once (provided it is not damaged), truck and aircraft tyres several times. This method not only has the Advantagethat less waste is produced and resources are conserved will also be around 70 per cent energy during production saved. It's actually a win-win situation, but unfortunately the demand for retreaded tyres is falling. This is due to cheap new tyres that are entering the market from the Far East. The Material utilisation takes place in so-called Pelletising plants. There, the used tyres are first turned into granulate in huge machines and then into fine or coarse Rubber powder ground. This rubber powder in turn serves as a valuable raw material. It is used to make surfaces for sports fields or fall protection mats for swimming pools and playgrounds. Numerous uses from the sole of the shoe to the seal are conceivable. Very well suited Rubber powder also as a bitumen admixture in road construction.
"Rubberised asphalt is quieter, has better drainage properties, is safer and lasts longer. Unfortunately, it has so far only been used very hesitantly in Germany. If this were to change, it would be a major step forward for used tyre disposal.
Scrap tyres are also an excellent Secondary fuel and are used instead of fossil fuels such as crude oil and coal, for example in cement works. The use of used tyres as fuel saves valuable, non-renewable raw materials. In addition, the organic pollutants contained in the tyres are completely and harmlessly incinerated at the high temperatures reached in the kilns and when the exhaust air is cleaned.
