Andreas Döring worked for our company for 13 years and, as an authorised signatory and plant manager, shaped the development of the Landau site. We are deeply shocked and cannot comprehend it - Andreas is irreplaceable as a person and colleague. We are grateful for the time we spent together and bid farewell with great respect to a valued and popular colleague who will be remembered by us and our business partners as a kind and helpful person.
2023 began for us with extraordinary trips into the world of winegrowers and classic cars. Our first trip of the year was to the Winzer Service trade fair in Karlsruhe from 8 to 10 February, where we were able to try out and demonstrate our new portable trade fair stand. Under the motto "We dispose of great things", we informed visitors about the possibilities of used tyre disposal and recycling and were able to introduce them to the topic of recycling management. But that was not all: another special exhibition venue awaited us from 23 to 26 February in Stuttgart at RETRO CLASSICS, the trade fair for driving culture. There, we were able to position ourselves among beautiful classic cars and inform lovers of automotive legends about our work and our goals.
After more than six years of successful collaboration, Reinhard Zweck took his well-deserved retirement in January of this year. Over the past six years, he has successfully managed and shaped sales at KURZ Karkassenhandel as a field sales manager. Reinhard Zweck joined the waste disposal company in 2015 and, with his enormous expertise and experience as a carcass specialist, has provided many new impulses. Due to the dwindling trade in carcasses, the professional disposal of used tyres became his main business. The handling of pricing, scheduling and customer care were among Reinhard Zweck's many strengths. Reinhard Zweck is particularly pleased that tyre retreading is now experiencing a renaissance due to various influences and that he can therefore hand over an active division to his successor. "We would like to thank Reinhard Zweck for his outstanding commitment. He marks the end of an era"says Hanna Schöberl. "There will be many shared moments that we will remember for a long time to come."
As part of the AZuR network, KURZ Karkassenhandel was represented by Managing Director Hanna Schöberl at the Michelin retreading plant in Homburg at the beginning of December. During the tour of the plant, we were able to see for ourselves that not only the ecological balance of retreaded tyres is right, but also the business model behind them.
On 29 November this year, our company founder Karl Kurz would have turned 90. He was a great role model for all of us and was always held in high esteem thanks to his nature. The young Karl Kurz's career began as a carpenter in a furniture factory and ended with the establishment of a medium-sized company with two branches. We all appreciate your work and the trust you always placed in us; we miss you, Karlo!
SWR's investigative research format "Vollbild" has taken on the topic of the "Environmental problem: Illegal disposal of used tyres" and is looking for clues in the waste disposal industry: undercover at dubious waste dealers, in conversation with tyre manufacturers, professional waste disposal companies and the ZARE initiative, which we have been part of since its foundation and which is committed to proper disposal in the sense of the circular economy.
The Report "How the tyre mafia is poisoning nature" gives an insight into an environmental scandal and is definitely worth seeing.
After a long Corona break, the trade fair is finally back! From 5 - 7 May, we were at RecyclingAKTIV with our stand for you and celebrated our 67th company birthday there at the start of the trade fair.
For the second time, we were the only German company to be nominated for the Recircle Awards in the category "Best Provider of Container and Tyre Disposal Services"! Unfortunately, we just missed out on the award, but we are still proud to have been nominated alongside numerous experts. We will be back next year and want to be on the podium.
On 24 December, Karl Kurz passed away at the age of 89 after a short illness surrounded by his family.
The KURZ veteran leaves a gap that cannot be filled in the hearts of the entire team, who are grateful for the unique life's work he has created.
After more than 65 years in the tyre and casing trade, Karl Kurz retired from day-to-day business in March and handed over the baton to his granddaughter Hanna Schöberl, who has been Managing Director since 2017.
After the long coronavirus break, we were finally back at NUFAM, the trade fair for the commercial vehicle industry in Karlsruhe, from 30 September to 3 October. On our stand, we presented our services and the many possibilities of sustainable used tyre recycling - including the life cycle of a used tyre, three stages of retreading and our new truck with a roll-off container.
KURZ has been committed to responsible waste tyre disposal since the 1980s. This is why we are involved in the AZuR (Alliance Future Tyres) network, which was founded in 2020. The AZuR used tyre recycling innovation forum includes companies, associations and research institutions. Their aim is to recycle 100 per cent of used tyres and rubber in the future and reduce the volume of used tyres. AZuR creates a cross-industry network of players from business and science in order to promote the sustainable disposal of used tyres.
The aim of the NEW LIFE initiative is to establish recycled material from used tyres (end-of-life tyres, ELT for short) as a sustainable raw material for high-quality and durable products. KURZ has been a partner of the initiative since 2020. The rubber powder from KURZ can be used for the production of many sustainable products such as flooring, sound insulation and asphalt.
KURZ demonstrates the quality of the rubber asphalt directly on its own farm and had rubber-modified asphalt applied to its own premises in Wendlingen. The company used its own rubber powder and the additive "VESTENAMER®". Tests show that the additive is easy to process and offers decisive advantages over other types of asphalt: less rutting, longer durability and significantly less noise, especially when laying open-pored asphalt.
"The yard renovation work took around 14 days," says Hanna Schöberl, Managing Director of Kurz Karkassenhandel, "we are delighted with this investment in the future and would like to thank the companies involved." The first tests already showed that the asphalt still looks like new even after months and can withstand the highest loads from heavy container vehicles. A double success: the rubber modification improves the asphalt and the recycling of rubber powder from old tyres also protects the environment.
In keeping with this KURZ from 5 to 7 September at the RecyclingAktiv trade fair in Karlsruhe and from 26 to 29 September at NUFAM services, product innovations and, above all, the recycling process for rubber powder production.
KURZ Karkassenhandel, together with other representatives of the ZARE initiative, campaigned for the goal of responsible used tyre recovery and recycling at the initiative's joint trade fair stand. In a panel discussion at the trade fair, Hanna Schöberl (KURZ Karkassenhandel), Danny Schwalbe (MRH Mülsener Rohstoff- und Handelsgesellschaft mbH), Dr Stefan Hoyer (Chemnitz University of Applied Sciences) and Peter Lüdorf (Gummi Berger), moderated by Yorick M. Lowin (BRV), raised awareness of the challenges facing the industry and discussed new solutions for used tyre disposal.
The status quo and possible solutions for used tyre recovery and recycling were also discussed with the mobility portal Motordialog.de: Reinhard Zweck from KURZ was invited to join Danny Schwalbe (MRH Mülsener Rohstoff- und Handelsgesellschaft mbH), Stephan Rau (wdk) and Falk Müller (Reifen Manufaktur) for an interview in the live studio. An all-round successful trade fair appearance by KURZ.
In mid-January, the staff at the Wendlingen branch moved into the new offices. The new office is larger, more comfortable and enables more efficient work processes. The centrepiece of the new building is Karl Kurz's executive office. "With the new office building, we are ensuring that we can continue to meet the increasing market requirements. It is an investment in the future," said Managing Director Hanna Schöberl.
The employees in Landau were also able to enjoy a newly expanded office. The new location on the company premises in Landau offers all commercial employees significantly more space, has the latest technical equipment and optimises processes.
Hanna Schöberl, 33 years old and an authorised signatory at Kurz Karkassenhandel for four years, is the granddaughter of Managing Director Karl Kurz. She will assist him as equal Managing Director until his retirement.
The recycling of used tyres is one of the greatest ecological challenges of our time. It is roughly estimated that around 65 million used tyres are produced in Germany every year. What is not suitable for retreading or export is either used as fuel or processed into rubber granulate and powder: a material that is used in a wide variety of areas. The fine grinding plant, which Kurz Karkassenhandel inaugurated this year, will eject around two tonnes of this versatile product every hour when fully operational.
The fleet of KURZ Karkassenhandel GmbH is being comprehensively expanded with three of its own roll-off trailers. The company is thus investing in its logistical expertise and flexibility, while at the same time increasing its service capacity.

Hanna Schöberl, granddaughter of company founder Karl Kurz, is appointed authorised signatory in Wendlingen.
KURZ Karkassenhandel GmbH will be represented at the Reifen trade fair in Essen from 20 to 23 May.
The facilities in Landau are modernised with a new, more efficient shredder system. Thanks to the combination of many years of experience and modern technical machinery, KURZ Karkassenhandel GmbH 100% fulfils the guidelines for professional used tyre disposal and thus helps to protect the environment.
In 1955, Karl Kurz laid the foundations for Europe's oldest trading company for casings and used tyres at Olgaeck in Stuttgart and founded KURZ Karkassenhandel GmbH. With branches in Europe and Africa, he established worldwide connections from Europe to North, South and Central America, Asia and Africa. This increased his expertise in the world's markets.Disposal order for registered customers only. Register now!
